'The course helped me get my first job in the advertising industry, and the skills I learned meant I hit the ground running from day one'.
My name is Brodie, and I studied MSc Creative Advertising at Edinburgh Napier University. I now work as a Senior Art Director and Motion Designer at the Always Be Content agency in Edinburgh. I signed up for the course because I wanted something hands‑on, practical, and focused on helping me build a career in the creative industries.
Why did you choose to study at Edinburgh Napier University?
The main reason I chose Edinburgh Napier was because of how vocational and industry focused the programme is. I was 27, so I didn't just want a degree - I wanted a job. From day one, the team were really clear that although good grades matter, the real aim is to help you develop a strong portfolio, make industry connections, and step confidently into the world of work.
Why did you decide to study MSc Creative Advertising?
I reached a point where I knew I wanted to work in advertising, but I didn't have the skills, structure, or industry understanding to get there. Doing a Master's felt like the right way to gain that confidence, learn how the industry operates, and build a solid creative foundation.
What did you do on your course?
I was in a really diverse group - some students were already working in advertising, some had come straight from their undergraduate degrees, and others, like me, were coming from a different place entirely. Our tutors all came from industry backgrounds and gave constant feedback and practical advice.
What was the biggest highlight of studying your Masters?
For me, the highlight was the support network - both from staff and from industry. Everyone I reached out to was generous with their time. I found a mentor who was the Deputy Creative Director at a local advertising agency. He met with me several times and offered me great advice and guidance. I also really valued the friendships I made on the course.
How did you manage the workload during your Masters?
The most challenging part at the beginning was adapting to the pace. There were lots of projects with quick deadlines. Breaking things down into smaller daily tasks helped me the most - even small progress adds up.
What advice would you give to someone considering a postgraduate degree?
If you're thinking about doing a Master's, it was the best decision I ever made. If you sign up for the course, don't be afraid to ask for help - the staff are friendly, supportive, and want to see you succeed.
