What will I learn?
The module provides a framework for identifying conflict situations and to understand ways conflict can escalate, emphasising the importance for developing a range of conflict styles to manage the variety of situations and players that you are likely to encounter. You will see effective and ineffective conflict management video examples drawn from rugby-union, touch (rugby), hockey and international tennis.
You will learn to:
- Identify and describe Thomas-Kilmann’s (1974) 5 conflict management styles
- Analyse your own dominant conflict management style
- Recognise situations that typically lead to conflict and when to intervene
Who will teach me?
Associate Professor Duncan Mascarenhas who has over 20 years of experience as a researcher and active sports official will use a range of digital images and videos to describe the theories.
Sue Redfern (ICC Development Panel Umpire) discusses how she uses an appropriate tone and body language to help prevent the escalation of conflict.
Former FIBA (International Basketball) Education & Development Manager Alan Richardson and FIH (International hockey) umpire Hamish Jamson highlight some of the characteristics that often cause conflict or lead to referees and umpires to mismanage player conflict in the game.
