Ethical messages: R H. Tawney confronts the information age.
This chapter sets ethical thinker R H Tawney in context as a dissident son of the British establishment. We explore the roots of his politics in philosophical idealism and religious socialism, before translating his famous critiques of acquisitiveness and inequality for the information age. Our main thesis is that Tawney's work supplied the resources for an important critical perspective on the information age. This chapter also emphasises Tawney's relevance for contemporary journalism practice, drawing comparisons with the contemporary school of public journalism in the USA. Tawney aimed to make a practical difference to society and employed academic writing and journalism as his tools.
