Research Output
We need to talk about CMV (CytoMegaloVirus).
Around 1 in 5 babies born with cytomegalovirus,
or CMV, will suffer serious consequences such
as hearing loss, cerebral palsy and epilepsy. Not
only does this put a huge strain on the families
affected, but also on the NHS.
Currently pregnant women receive no advice
about reducing their risk of infection. Educating
the general public, as well as health care
professionals, is fundamental to winning the
fight against CMV. Through education, we can
help babies receive an earlier diagnosis which
will allow the opportunity for treatment. More
research is also needed to develop an effective
CMV vaccine.
