The design of a CCTV system for use in a hazardous atmosphere
The aim of the project was to develop a new Pan, Tilt and Zoom (PTZ) camera station that could be used in the petrochemical industry. The petrochemical industry presents a number of unique environmental restrictions that impact new product design. The main one of these is the `Hazardous Atmosphere' created by flammable gases and
dust.
The initial stage of the project was to review the existing camera and determine areas for improvement. This phase of the project gave valuable guidance for the design of the new product. The implementation of the design review also provided insight into the product certification process.
The sponsor company were very keen to develop a new product shape that could be used as a powerful marketing tool. A new shape ~20~, illustrated below, presented a lot of new challenges and took the design into a wide variety of research areas. The overall complexity of the project meant that although a design was developed, it could not be completed in the timescale of this programme.
