The Gordian knot – provision and integrated provision in Scotland and England
Comment Paper: The changing shape of health means human resources is always adapting. Healthcare needs to assume that workforce delivery systems are efficient within defined financial parameters. In the UK, two NHS systems have emerged with fundamentally different prioritisation and needs which allow the examination of these prioritisations. The Scots and English have been faced by the same problems but have taken fundamentally different approaches in addressing them. The two main problems have been the nature of hospital capacity—the number and type of hospitals—and the composition of the workforce to deliver service. It is this that will be discussed in this article.
