Beyond beyond.
My paper reviews the evidence for, and the reasons why science exhibit design evidently fails to convey cognitive knowledge through affective display. Evidence is drawn on pilot interviews with curators, designers and visitors at science exhibits in Berlin and Edinburgh –work undertaken by Jennifer Apel in preparation for research registration for joint supervision at Napier/Humbolt Universities. The paper subjects this research to a ‘critical realist’ interpretation (as a philosophy of science extended to social and cultural phenomena) to present an argument for understanding the development and limitations of representation through design.
