Tauchnitz and Albatross: “a community of interests” in English-language paperback publishing 1934-1951.
This article draws on a variety of archival sources to re-examine the relationship between Tauchnitz Editions and the Albatross Press from 1934 to 1951. In particular, it attempts to revise the account of that relationship given in the bibliography of Tauchnitz compiled by William B Todd and Ann Bowden. Greater prominence is given to the role of Max Christian Wegner in both companies and to his innovative publishing practice. The political context of the period is emphasized as a significant factor in the interlocking histories of both companies.
