This article reflects on the authors’ personal experiences of undertaking qualitative research with children and parents in a family setting. Despite the implications and challenges of such a multiple perspective approach, this kind of research gives researchers privileged access to families’ lives. The article draws on the authors’ knowledge across a range of qualitative interview-based projects, focusing in particular on two case studies, to highlight the practical workings of the challenges posed by multiple perspective research in families. The implications of research with parents and children are examined with respect to two themes, namely power and truth. The discussion outlines the benefits of multiple perspective research at different points in the research process. The article does not attempt to provide definitive answers to some of the challenges posed, but instead aims to open up discussion by reflecting on a range of scenarios, offering suggestions based on experience in an attempt to guide other researchers in their own unique research situations
