This text places data modelling alongside functional analysis. The first part of the book deals with information, data, data administration and the purpose for building data models. In the second part, the relational and entity-relationship data models are covered in depth, along with a comprehensive chapter on normalization. This takes readers carefully through to the important, but often ignored, fifth normal form. Strategic data is also covered. One of the features of this book is the use of many examples and an extended, annotated case study. No previous computing knowledge is assumed, and the book is suitable for a first- or second-year course on data modelling for business studies, management or computing students
